Scripture Reflection

Advent - The long history of waiting

Advent is a time of waiting.

We wait in the spirit of the people of Israel who waited in their
history for the intervention of God – Emmanuelle, God with us.
They waited as they wandered in the desert for forty years,
and they waited in Exile in Babylon for almost seventy years.

In this same spirit Jesus and his disciples, both women and men,
waited for God’s leading. In Luke’s Infancy Narrative Anna and
Simeon waited to see God’s presence in Jesus. The disciples
waited after the death of Jesus to see and hear the leading of God.

As we wait this Advent we know that we are accompanied by
this “cloud of witnesses” who have gone before us an awaited
God’s leading.

We know the experience of God with us and yet we await
this experience with hope.

Reflection question:

We know who we await this Advent, the question is how do we wait?
